Tory voters want to see the Carer’s Allowance benefit increased during Covid-19 pandemic, poll reveals

I agree with any increase in Carer’s Allowance, which is only available to unpaid carers, who are usually family members of the person in need of care.

However, I would go even further for this is a taxable benefit, when it should not be.

There are other requirements which are

You could get £67.25 a week if you care for someone at least 35 hours a week and they get certain benefits.

You do not have to be related to, or live with, the person you care for.

You do not get paid extra if you care for more than one person.

If someone else also cares for the same person as you, only one of you can claim Carer’s Allowance.

Carer’s Allowance can affect the other benefits that you and the person you care for get. You have to pay tax on it if your income is over the Personal Allowance.

What it does not state here is the fact, that when you start to draw your State Pension, you are not allowed to have Carers Allowance also, even, if you still meet the other qualifying requirements mentioned above.

For Carer’s Allowance is there to compensate you for any loss of earnings you may be subject to while to are caring, and when you start to draw your pension, there would be no loss of pension for caring.

So, this is a further change that is required for it should not be classed as an allowance, but a fully recognised benefit for caring, irrespective of what your income is. As it is possible, if you do not have sufficient qualifying years, that your pension could be less than the allowance, but then that could well be increased by Pension Credits.
